Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the knowledge and awareness of harmful rays such as blue light including ultraviolet rays for university students.
Methods : This study targeted 103 university students who responded to an online survey from April 2023 to May 2023. The questionnaire contained a total of 15 items regarding general characteristics, knowledge and awareness of UV ray and blue light blocking lenses, and requirements for guidelines for selecting blocking lenses. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 18.0.
Results : The percentage of wearing glasses or contact lenses to block UV rays was 56.3%, but the percentage of using blue light blocking glasses or contact lenses was 35.9%, a relatively low percentage. The knowledge score on the harmfulness of ultraviolet and blue light was 2.58¡¾0.91 and 2.44¡¾0.98, respectively. The average score of items considered important to protect eyes from ultraviolet and blue light was 3.49¡¾0.61 and 3.35¡¾0.68, respectively, indicating high awareness of the importance of blocking ultraviolet and blue light.
Conclusion : University students' knowledge and awareness of UV ray and blue light were at a high level, but their knowledge of the correct selection for blue light blocking lenses was low. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen education and establish guidelines for the correct selection of blue light blocking lenses.
